Addressing Social Stigma in the Global Context:

A Sociopolitical Examination of LGBTQ+ Experiences in the U.S. and Brazil

featuring Washington University in St. Louis

The program took place in São Paulo, and the students had the opportunity to visit and get to know public and private organizations focused on the topic, as well as the chance to speak with the leading figures of the cause. They also had meaningful conversation sessions with institutions directly connected to the LGBTQIA+ community.

LGBTQ+ Roundtable

Students came together to participate in an interactive discussion with leaders of a series of different organizations that work with, serve, and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community.

The roundtable was led by Viviane Suzano Martinhão, Clinical Psychologist at Casa 1; Walter Mastelaro Neto, Representative of the Brazilian Association of Intersex People (ABRAI); and Thiago Guarnieri Roveri, Partner at Mais Diversidade. Over the course of the discussion, students had the chance to ask these community leaders about subjects ranging from healthcare for trans people to the intersections of race, sexuality, and gender in Brazil.

Visit to APOLGBT

Following their roundtable discussion, students then had the chance to visit the Association of the LGBT Pride Parade of São Paulo (APOLGBT). APOLGBT is the organization responsible for organizing São Paulo’s LGBT Pride Parade every year, which is considered to be the largest in the world.

The visit was led by Diego Oliveira, Cultural Director and Head of Fundraising, who presented an overview on the history of the parade, the organization’s work, and the importance of the pride parade.

Our passion in the academic field has given us the privilege of actively collaborating with more than 80 universities, offering professional and extracurricular experience journeys directly impacting more than 4000 students.
