PHOTO JOURNEY:

Brazil: A Social Mosaic

featuring University of Notre Dame

The “Brazil: A Social Mosaic” program is an interdisciplinary course taught by Professor Marcio Bahia focusing on the social, ethnic, and cultural dynamic that makes up the “Giant of South America.” A comprehensive cultural initiative that introduces students to Brazil’s multicultural landscape, where they learn about immigration, racial issues, social work, and the most pressing causes in Brazil.

In this photojourney, we highlight two interactions that were part of this incredible journey of international education!

Interaction:

NAVE Capão

Nave Capão is a non-governmental organization that works to combat social inequality, helping children in highly vulnerable situations in Capão Redondo, in the extreme south of São Paulo.

The students spoke with Micheline Farias, co-founder of the NGO, about the programs that Nave offers (extracurricular activities for low-income students, help preparing teenagers to enter the job market, tutoring/school support). After that, the students watched a presentation of the Nave’s percussion project with children aged approximately 8 years old and interacted with them.

Interaction:

4YOU2

Founded in 2012 by Gustavo Fuga, 4YOU2 is a social impact startup focused on teaching the English language that seeks to transform and democratize language teaching in Brazil, offering high-quality English courses with foreign teachers at an affordable price for the population.

Gustavo Fuga spoke with the students about the origins of 4you2, entrepreneurship, future plans (both the company’s and his personal plans) and the impact that 4you2 had in changing the lives of its low-income students (more opportunities, better jobs). Fuga even gave the example of a former student who had become the manager at his bank thanks to the opportunities that arose because he spoke English.

Our passion in the academic field has given us the privilege of actively collaborating with more than 80 universities, offering professional and extracurricular experience journeys directly impacting more than 4000 students.
