PHOTO JOURNEY:

Sustainable Business in Emerging Markets

featuring North Carolina State University

This program, held in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, offered NC State Jenkins graduate students an in-depth look at sustainability issues through site visits, discussions with local business and community leaders, and hands-on projects.

Students explored Brazil’s economic and business landscape, visiting a range of business models from certified B Corporations, to small social enterprises as well as large, multinational businesses, which provided an understanding of global sustainability-related business challenges, opportunities and strategies.

In this photojourney, we highlight two interactions that were part of this incredible journey of international education!

Interaction:

Litro de Luz

Students visited Litro de Luz, an NGO dedicated to bringing sustainable and innovative lighting solutions to underserved communities. During this visit, students learned about the organization’s creative approach to providing electricity to those in need.

They discussed the challenges of accessing energy in certain areas of Brazil and how Litro de Luz’s technology significantly improves the lives of people in these communities. The students were inspired by how the organization works with local communities to install and maintain sustainable energy solutions using recycled plastic bottles.

Interaction:

NUDE

The group also visited Nude, a Brazilian foodtech company, which develops its foods from oats, coming from small producers. Nude is a B-corp that invests in FoodScience, with a 100% plant based production that cares about the future through research and the creation of innovative food products, inserting a more modern, sustainable and efficient ecosystem in all its stages, from food processing to distribution and consumption.

During this visit, students engaged in a conversation about Nude’s journey, exploring the company’s approach to innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainability. The visit provided valuable insights into how Nude navigates the Brazilian market and integrates sustainable practices into its business model, offering a real-world example of successful sustainable entrepreneurship.

Our passion in the academic field has given us the privilege of actively collaborating with more than 80 universities, offering professional and extracurricular experience journeys directly impacting more than 4000 students.
